How to use voice to text live

  • Windows. Click into a text box, press the Windows key and H, and start talking.
  • Google Docs. Open Tools, choose Voice typing, click the microphone, and speak.
  • Phone. Tap a text field, then tap the microphone key on the keyboard.

How to convert a voice recording to text

Save the recording as a file, then upload it above. Voice recorders, phone apps, and laptop recordings all work if they export MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG, FLAC, AAC, or WebM. The file must be under 50 MB, and you can upload one at a time.

The transcript appears as plain text. Copy it, or download a .txt file named after your recording. There are no timestamps or speaker labels, and no editor on the page.

WAV files hit the size limit fast. Convert one with the WAV to MP3 converter before you upload.

How to get a more accurate transcript

  • One voice at a time. Overlapping speech can cause missing or merged words.
  • Microphone close. A phone held near the speaker beats one lying across the room.
  • Quiet room. Fans, traffic, and music all reduce accuracy.
  • The original file. A copy that a messaging app already compressed has less detail to work with.
  • Proper names. Say names and terms slowly, then check how they came out.

What happens to your recording
