How to summarize an image

  1. 01

    Choose an image

Pick a PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, SVG, BMP or TIFF file up to 25 MB. Crop it to the part you care about first.

  2. 02

    Press Summarize image

Complete the security check, then press the button. The image is uploaded at that point, not when you choose it.

  3. 03

    Copy or save the summary

The summary appears next to your image. Copy it, or download it as a TXT file.

What the image summary gives you

The result is one written summary, shown next to your image. It is a summary, not a transcription. There is no separate text tab, so you do not get the text in the picture word for word.

Copy the summary or download it as a TXT file. The tool takes one image at a time.

Images that summarize well

Legible text matters more than megapixels.

  • Crop to one page, one chart or one slide.
  • Shoot straight on, so lines of text stay horizontal.
  • Avoid glare and shadows across the writing.
  • Take a screenshot instead of a photo of a screen. A screenshot has no glare.
  • Keep text large enough to read at full size. A tiny caption in the corner may be skipped.

Screenshots, notes and charts

A screenshot of an article or a post gets the gist of the text. A photo of printed notes works too. Handwriting varies a lot with the writer.

For a chart, expect the title, the axes and the main trend. Read every number you plan to quote off the original chart.

When you need the exact text

The summary condenses what the image shows and may reword its text. For a quote, an invoice figure or a clause in a contract, copy it from the original.

If the source is a text PDF, upload it to the paper summarizer and open the Convert to text tab for the text it extracted.
