Which file types can I convert?

You can upload MP4, AVI, MOV, FLV, MKV, WebM, 3GP, MPEG, MPG, GIF, WMV and TS video, and MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, AIFF, WAV and M4A audio. You can convert to any of those except MPG and TS.

Is my file uploaded to a server?

Yes. The conversion runs on Sceneform's servers, so your file is uploaded first. Uploads are deleted after processing. Download links expire after one day.

Does converting a file reduce its quality?

Sometimes. Converting to a lossy format such as MP3 or AAC usually shrinks the file and gives up some detail. Converting to WAV, AIFF or FLAC usually makes the file larger and cannot bring back detail an earlier format removed.

How do I get the audio out of a video?

Use a video to audio page such as MP4 to MP3 or MOV to MP3, or the Video to audio page to pick the format. They take the video file and save only the sound.

Can I turn an audio file into a video?

Yes. The Audio to video converter makes a video with a black picture and your audio. It adds no artwork or visualizer, so use it for sites that only accept video.

Can I paste a link, convert several files, or set the bitrate?

No. The converter takes one uploaded file at a time. It does not read links, and its output settings are fixed. For a YouTube link, use YouTube to MP3.

Which format should I choose?

Choose MP4 for video and MP3 for audio when you want the file to play almost anywhere. Choose WAV or AIFF for editing, and GIF only for short silent loops.

Why is my converted file bigger than the original?

Converting a compressed file to WAV, AIFF or FLAC usually makes it larger, because those formats keep more data. GIF files are often large too. Converting to MP3 or AAC usually makes a file smaller.

How to choose an output format

A smaller audio file to share	WAV to MP3, M4A to MP3, OGG to MP3	MP3 plays almost everywhere. A ten-minute CD-quality WAV is about 106 MB, and the MP3 is about 14 MB.
Audio you plan to edit	MP3 to WAV, AAC to WAV, M4A to WAV	Editors handle uncompressed audio easily. The file grows, and detail the original lost does not return.
Video that plays almost everywhere	MOV to MP4, WebM to MP4, AVI to MP4, MKV to MP4	Phones, browsers, editors and social uploads accept MP4 more often than any other video format.
Only the sound from a video	MP4 to MP3, MOV to MP3, MKV to MP3	MP3 is usually the smallest result. Choose WAV instead if you will edit the audio, so it is not compressed twice.
A short looping clip	MP4 to GIF, MOV to GIF, WebM to GIF	GIFs are silent and usually large. If the site accepts video, MP4 is usually smaller and smoother.

What this converter does not do

It converts one file at a time. There is no batch.
It has no settings for bitrate, resolution, frame rate, trimming or cropping. Each format is written the same way every time, for example MP3 at 192 kbit/s.
It takes uploads, not links. For a YouTube link, use YouTube to MP3 or the Video downloader.
It does not repair damaged files. A file that will not play on your device will not convert either.

Will converting hurt my file's quality?

A conversion can keep quality or lose it. It never adds any.

Lossless to lossy. WAV to MP3 usually makes the file much smaller and gives up some detail. Keep the WAV.
Lossy to lossless. MP3 to WAV makes the file larger and easier to edit. The sound does not improve.
Lossy to lossy. MP3 to AAC compresses the audio a second time, and each pass loses a little more.
Video to MP4. The converter first tries to keep the picture and sound as they are. When it has to re-encode, it uses H.264 video and AAC audio.
