All 33 toolsWhy convert MP4 to MP3?
An MP4 holds the picture and the sound together. This converter keeps only the sound and saves it as an MP3 you can play on a phone, in a car, or in a podcast app.
- Why leave MP4. An MP4 carries the picture too, so it is usually much larger than the audio alone when you only need the sound.
- Why use MP3. MP3 suits podcasts, voice notes, music libraries, and sharing.
- Your rights. Convert only files you own or have permission to use.
Which MP4 files work
Any MP4 with a sound track works: a lecture, an interview, a meeting recording, a screen recording with narration, or a music video you own.
A recording with no audio track has nothing to extract.
Is 192 kbit/s good enough?
The MP3 is always encoded at 192 kbit/s, and there is no bitrate setting. That is plenty for speech and fine for music on phone speakers and earbuds.
The sound inside most MP4 files is already compressed, usually as AAC. Turning it into MP3 compresses it a second time, so the MP3 cannot sound better than the video did.
If you plan to edit the audio, convert to WAV instead so it is not compressed twice. A WAV is much larger, and it is not compressed again.
- MP4 to WAV keeps the sound uncompressed for editing.
Need the words instead of the audio?
If you want a transcript of what is said, you do not need to extract the audio first.
- Video to text takes the video file and returns the spoken words as text.
- YouTube till MP3 handles a YouTube link, which this page cannot read.
