Why convert WAV to MP3?

WAV files are uncompressed, so they are big. A ten-minute stereo recording at CD quality is about 106 MB as a WAV and about 14 MB as an MP3, small enough to email and upload.

  • Why leave WAV. WAV files are large, and email and upload forms often limit their size.
  • Why use MP3. MP3 suits podcasts, voice notes, music libraries, and sharing.
  • Your rights. Convert only files you own or have permission to use.

How much smaller will the MP3 be?

A CD-quality stereo WAV (44.1 kHz, 16-bit) uses about 10.6 MB a minute. The MP3 uses about 1.4 MB a minute at 192 kbit/s, roughly a seventh of the size.

A 48 kHz, 24-bit WAV from a recorder or editor is bigger, so it shrinks by more than 10 times.

Is 192 kbit/s good enough?

There is no bitrate setting. The converter always writes 192 kbit/s, which suits podcasts, interviews, voice notes, and music for casual listening.

Keep the WAV for a master, a mix you will keep working on, or a file going to a mastering engineer. The MP3 is for sharing, and it cannot give you the WAV back.

The 200 MB limit

Audio files can be up to 200 MB. That is about 19 minutes of CD-quality stereo WAV, or about 12 minutes at 48 kHz and 24-bit.

For a longer recording, export it in parts from your audio editor. A file over the limit is rejected before it uploads.

  • Speech to text turns a saved recording into a transcript, if the words matter more than the file.
