Why convert MPEG to WAV?

Separate an MPEG recording's soundtrack from its picture. The WAV holds uncompressed 16-bit audio.

  • Why leave MPEG. MPEG compresses less efficiently than newer formats, so files are usually larger and newer apps often skip them.
  • Why use WAV. WAV suits editing, production, and master copies.
  • What you get. The WAV output contains uncompressed 16-bit audio. It is usually larger than a compressed source. The source needs an audio track. The output has no picture.
  • Kvalitet. Converting MPEG to WAV cannot improve the sound. The WAV holds only the audio track, so the sound inside the MPEG sets the best quality you can get. The WAV is usually much larger than the compressed sound inside the video. It is 16-bit, so a 24-bit soundtrack is reduced to 16-bit.
  • Your rights. Convert only files you own or have permission to use.
