What the summary contains

Under the video's title and length, you get up to four parts. The last three are hidden when they are empty.

  • Summary. A short overview of what the video covers.
  • Highlights. The main points, as a list.
  • Key insights. A second list, shown under the highlights.
  • Conclusion. How the video ends.

Copy puts all four parts on your clipboard with those labels. The summary has one length and no timestamps, and you cannot ask follow-up questions. For those, use a chat assistant as described below.

Summarize a YouTube video with ChatGPT yourself

A chat assistant such as ChatGPT can summarize a video too. It needs the video's words first, so the usual route has three steps:

  1. Get the text with the YouTube to text tool and copy it.
  2. Paste it into the chat, after a short instruction.
  3. Read the answer and check the claims that matter.

An instruction that works: summarize this transcript in five bullet points, then list every number, name, and step it mentions. You can ask for any length or format, which this page's fixed summary cannot do.

A very long transcript can be more than a chat accepts. If it refuses, paste the transcript in parts, ask for a summary of each part, then ask for a summary of those summaries.

This page needs no ChatGPT account and nothing to install. Use it when you want the summary in one step.

Which videos summarize well

Videos where someone explains something in order give the best results: lectures, tutorials, interviews, webinars, talks, and product reviews. Three kinds give less:

  • Music videos and clips with little speech.
  • Videos that show the point on screen, like a coding demo or a cooking video. The summary only has what is said aloud.
  • Very short videos. Watching them is often quicker than reading a summary.

This page is set to English and has no language selector. Check a summary of a video in another language against the video.

Check a summary before you rely on it

  • Find any quote, number, or name from the summary in the video, or in its transcript from the YouTube transcript generator.
  • Treat a surprising claim as something to check, not a fact.
  • If a detail matters, watch that part of the video.
  • When you cite something, cite the video, not the summary.
