All 33 toolsWhy convert MOV to MP4?
MOV is Apple's QuickTime format, and it is what iPhones, iPads and Mac screen recordings save. MP4 holds the same kind of video, and more phones, browsers, editors and upload forms usually accept it.
- Why leave MOV. Windows players, many editors and web forms reject some MOV files.
- Why use MP4. MP4 suits sharing, uploads, phone recordings, and web playback.
- Your rights. Convert only files you own or have permission to use.
Will MOV to MP4 lose quality?
Often not. MOV and MP4 are both containers, and an iPhone MOV usually carries H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio, which an MP4 can hold.
The converter first tries to copy the video and audio without compressing them again. If it cannot, it encodes H.264 video and AAC audio, and that can cost a little quality. Either way it never adds resolution.
The file size usually stays close to the MOV when the video and audio are copied. A new encode can make it larger or smaller.
iPhone videos and the 500 MB limit
Long 4K clips can pass 500 MB, and the converter rejects larger files before they upload.
Trim the clip first. In Photos, open the video, tap Edit, and drag the ends of the timeline. Converting two shorter parts also works.
When MOV to MP4 helps
- A form, course platform or email tool only accepts MP4.
- A Windows PC or Android phone will not play the clip.
- An editor or messaging app rejects the .mov file.
