How to summarize a Word document

  1. 01

    Choose your Word file

Pick a DOC or DOCX file under 25 MB. Remove any password first, because protected files can't be read.

  2. 02

    Select Summarize document

Complete the security check, then select Summarize document. The tool reads the text and writes the summary.

  3. 03

    Read, copy, or download

The Summary tab has the summary and key points. The Convert to text tab has the full text. Copy or download either one as a .txt file.

What the Word summarizer does

It reads the text of your DOC or DOCX file and returns two things in two tabs. The Summary tab has a short summary and a list of key points. The Convert to text tab has the full text the tool pulled out of the file.

Copy or download whichever tab you are viewing as a .txt file. On the Summary tab, copy and download include the summary text only. The key points stay on screen, so copy them from there.

Which Word files work

The tool takes DOC and DOCX files up to 25 MB. It handles one file at a time, and it limits size, not page count.

  • A password-protected or damaged file fails. Remove the password in Word, save, and upload again.
  • In Google Docs, choose File, then Download, then Microsoft Word (.docx), and upload that file.
  • A scan or a photo of pages has no text for the tool to read. Use the Image Summarizer instead.

Check the summary against the text

Open the Convert to text tab first if the document has tables, text boxes, or unusual layout. If a section is missing there, the summary could not use it either.

Then read the summary with the original beside it. Check dates, amounts, names, and any sentence with a "not" or an exception. A summary is good for deciding what to read in full, and a poor substitute for the parts that carry a decision.
